BSG 1:1 and 1:2

Finally watching more BSG - bring on the drama!

YES HE CAN!

I  thought The Mutterer was going to be the craziest person on the bus. No, no - that turned out the be the guy who started laughing maniacally, exclaimed several times that the sun was coming up (over the horizon, no less), then started singing (She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain), before reciting part of King's I Have a Dream speech and telling us he was "one of them" (an "integrator"). As it turns out, he has a plan for integration that will work, if he's not assassinated 1st. He can also save the country (financially) if we just put him in office. He "can show those Wall Street boys how it's done, 'cause [he's] the last honest man - the last one left!" He may, in fact, be right; which is too bad, since he's also INSANE.

I *HEART* Muni!

A midday pick-me-up

Ohmygod, guys - you NEED to look at this!

Wow. I kind of want to roll up to class in something like ALT's ensemble, and just sit down and teach, like I'm not wearing a big, fur hat. that would be amazing. Alas, I own neither a caftan nor a ginormous fur hat. Something to work towards, then.

The opinions expressed in this post do not reflect those of the management...

Tonight, I am meditating on vengeance.

No, no - not to worry! I have not been grievously wronged. Nor am I *plotting* revenge - I'm just meditating on it. See, I'm doing some cleaning (what else would I be doing when I've got reading to do and a proposal to work on?), and I came across the pages I saved from last year's desk calendar, the 2009 version of this:

Appalled, but sadly not shocked

I'm not even sure how to express how deeply I object to NBC's decision to broadcast Nodar Kumaritashvili's death. I do not mean that this should not be reported on - it certainly should. But showing that footage is not reporting. It is lurid sensationalism and it panders to the basest tendencies of the viewing public. If showing it at all was in incredibly poor taste, replaying it in slow motion was simply obscene.

LIVEBLOGGING THE SUPERBOWL XLIV: SAINTS v. COLTS

So, I am not at all superstitious. Except about the Saints. So, since I was liveblogging the last time I watched a game (which we totally won!), I will also be liveblogging the Superbowl. That's right, kids - THE SAINTS ARE IN THE GODDAMNED SUPERBOWL!!!

See you at game time.

Class is in session

Today's topic: Us. Or, as I like to think of it (justifiably or not), Them.

I really am about to start grading, so cannot go read the source piece ("Down With the People" by Jacob Weisberg, over at Slate) right now, but plan to do so later. The excerpt ("Are Americans Themselves to Blame?") over at The United States of Jamerica caught my attention, though. Here's a taste:

The usual way to describe such inconsistent demands from voters is to say that the public is an angry, populist, tea-partying mood. But a lot more people are watching American Idol than are watching Glenn Beck, and our collective illogic is mostly negligent rather than militant.

Weisberg has, in my opinion, a valid point. That being, in a nutshell, that our populus is a hot mess, making it not at all surprising that our government is a train wreck. I'll see what else he's saying once I've gotten some papers graded, and reserve the right to object at such time.

But, what do you think?

This is a test...

Trying to figure out how to stop Facebook from importing more that I want it to. Please ignore.

This is here to take up space. I haven't yet figured out another way to ensure that spoilery things don't get shown to those who'd rather not see them. I'm working on it. In the meantime, I think there will be random text in this spot, so that none of the actual spoilery content gets posted.

Move along, nothing to see here...
